My First Wellness Workshop

My first Wellness Workshop was on March 9. The theme was Mindfulness. I trained my volunteers, gathered my supplies (such as chocolate, flyers, and handouts) and advertised over the PA. Unfortunately, not many people joined in on our meditation. There are a few reasons why I think that happened: mainly, I think it was because it was held on a Monday morning - when students aren’t exactly awake yet. My plan moving forward was to hold my second Workshop (the theme being Social Media) on March 30 and invite a member of the Council to come and observe my project. However, because of the COVID-19 crisis, I was obviously unable to follow through with my plan. That being said, this disruption will greatly affect my Gold Award; all of my workshops have been canceled. I emailed Ms. Pulley on March 18 informing her of the postponement of my Gold Award.

I do not see this as a setback or failure. With the cancellation of these Wellness Workshops for the 2019-2020 school year, I can spend the summer planning more social media/de-stressing Workshop ideas that I can implement on day 6's next year. My first Workshop went well, but I would have liked more people to attend. I am going to focus on advertising more, and (once this pandemic settles) I am going to ask my adult contacts about opening my Workshops to lunch periods and/or after school next year. Instead of just 5 Workshops, I will be able to expand my Gold Award's overall impact by leading Wellness Workshops next year.

What is my plan for now until the summer? I am producing a video with the help of the school psychologist, Mrs. Rutkowski, and two Juniors who are interested in mental health. The video will include clips of students saying why they attend Wellness Workshops, along with a clip of me introducing my Gold Award and advertising my Wellness Workshops. Besides, Magnificat has created a “Spiritual Resources” page on its website to maintain students’ spiritual health during this pandemic. Mrs. Rutkowski helped me arrange to write reflections on the various reflections and prayers, beginning on May 27. Over the summer, I will also gather additional leadership experience which will help me further improve my Gold Award as a whole.

The bottom line: I am going to use the time I have been blessed with to improve my project. As a Junior next year, I will be able to advertise more, book better locations to lead my Workshops, and increase the overall impact of my Gold Award.
